What does a QS do (Other than count bricks?)

When I completed my Masters degree as a QS so many people would ask me what a QS was. As soon as you mention Surveyor their first thought is the bloke that comes round when you're looking to buy or sell your house. It's not that. Historically a Quantity Surveyor measured the quantites of all the materials that would be needed to complete a specific building project. It's a trade that can trace it's history back to Ancient Egypt helping the masons carve the correct shape blocks for the pyramids. Modern Surveying is different; it's far more high-tech. There's software that can look at a construction drawing and tell you how many square feet of carpet you'll need or how much guttering. That's not to say there isn't still space for the old school - nothing quite beats doing a takeoff the old fashioned way with a scale ruler and a pencil! QSs are money men, we're there to make sure that our clients get the maximum they are entitled for while minimising losses elsewhere.
If you're strugging to get what you believe you're entitled to on a construction project, get in touch and we can help.
